Saturday 16th April – Bike **** Esso Beach to Hayling seafront. Walk ***
Chantry Post – sunshine and showers – cold :(
I had gone down to Hayling to try and get a windsurf in as I haven’t been
for nearly two months, this must be my longest ever spell without sailing:(
Yesterday it was windy enough to sail on the seafront but the weather was
foul and I didn’t fancy paying £6 to park - we are very lucky here in
Felixstowe as we have arranged with the local council to pay £20 a year to
park at our main windsurfing spot! The tide was really wrong to sail from
Esso beach with high water at 7 in the morning and light winds so the plan
was to have a lay in and read our books but we heard someone rigging
outside the van so I got up to check the conditions. He was rigging 7.5 for
a big shortboard but the wind was very light and the tide dropping so I had
only a couple of hours and it was very cold with rain. Then, luckily before
I got the big board off the van, I realised that I hadn’t got my dagger
board! That made my mind up for me and I was pleased he couldn’t go
because the man was only out about 10 minutes before he packed up and it
was bloomin freezing anyway! We biked along the old railway line path
which was extremely muddy after yesterday’s rain!! We went to the ferry
end (it’s not running but they are hoping to reinstate it at some point)
then walked round on the beach to the sea front. Biked along to the
decrepit funfair then back to the railway line and home. We had lunch then
packed up and drove back up to the South Downs. We tried the car park at
Kithurst Hill but it has a height restriction so drove through Storrington
and up to a dead end road to Chantry Post where there was a brilliant place
to park. The views over to the sea are amazing:) We had a rest then walked
for an hour along the south downs way and back through a wood where we saw
two deer (we thought one of them was a rusty old oil can till it moved and
we noticed its little friend!!). There was a huge cow in a covered pen
with the tiniest calf which still had a matted coat as if it had just been
born :) Very cute. Back to the van for a scratched together tea (we are
running low on supplies!).
